| EIPO, EBA ink MOU |
The Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office (EIPO) and The Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority (EBA) signed here on Tire 10/2004 E.C at the former HQ a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to work jointly in and around common issues .
The objective of the agreement is to create awareness through the media on the part of the public about intellectual property laws and their implementation. When ever the laws were breached, the media plays a pivotal role of rectifying mistakes and exposing wrong deeds.
Signing the agreement EBA Director General , Desta Tesfaw and EIPO counterpart Berhanu Adelo said ‘’ to work jointly in the area not only build capacity but also speed up the process of change agents to build.
The two governmental organizations have reportedly promised to work in close consultation and cooperation for the full realization of the articles contained in the agreement. |

Training on transformational leadership and coaching ends
- Trainees are called on to put skills into practice

Transformational leadership and coaching course that has been organized by EBA Human Resource Management and Development Directorate and offered by the Ethiopian Management Institute for 9 days in three rounds comes to an end.
According to Directorate Director, Zewdu Admasse, Definition and scope, skills and art of management were in the list of topics of the training. The training enhances the capacity of staff in bringing best governance and management. Apart from making leadership in the authority modern and scientific, it also speeds up the change activities being undertaken here.

Participants on their part citing that the training has created them huge capacity, reiterated that such training be offered as well in the days ahead to come.
While Closing the training and handing certificates , EBA General Director Desta Tesfaw noted , recalling that management is decisive for change , that a leader is one who, being himself in the fore front , really leads and let others follow .And as such trainees are expected, by internalizing the lessons they get from the training , to Endeavour for better results, he said .
‘’Your Effectiveness is gauged by the mile stones that you practically put these skills into practice,’’ he told them.
Some 18 Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority directors and team leaders have reportedly attended the training. |

some 18 Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority directors and team leaders are attending a three day workshop on transformational leadership and coaching here at the conference hall.
While The training was organized by Authority Human Resource Management and Development Directorate, experts of Ethiopian management institute offered courses.
The objective of the training, according to Zewdu Admas, directorate director, is to enhance the capacity of staff in and around change management in an effort to bring best governance and management. It has not only a role to play to the proliferation of the organizational change activities being going on now in the authority ,but will also make leadership here modern and scientific, Zewdu noted.
Participants on their part reiterated that the training enhances team work, coordination and relationship.
Definition and scope of management, art of creativity, comprehensive out look management, skills of management were in the list of topics of the training.
The training, which lasts from Tahesas11-13 2004 E.C, is believed to be a continuation of the first and second round of similar training. |
Top Mgt Team winds its BSC tour up

EBA:-A high level supervision team led by EBA Director General , Desta Tesfaw has concluded its two week long tour on Tahesas/December/ 11, 2004 E.C with a final discussion held with the rank and file at the library.
It is to be recalled that the team was having separate and face to face discussion with professionals found in each work processes and units with regard to achievements made , challenges and problems encountered in the past few months during the implementation of the Balanced Score card (BSC).
Lack of planning decentralization , lack of enough materials , lack of two way communication and focus on routine were cited as obstacles to the speedy implementation of the plans at all levels . however, what ever the case might be , workers need to take their loads seriously and implement them diligently per the schedule they have set forth ,it was decided.
As the role such supervision plays for the realization of the plans is immense , the delegation will follow suits in the months to come ahead as necessary.
Some 17 professionals including guards, drivers, and janitors have reportedly attended the finale discussion .
The BSC will go full swing as of January. |
Staffs of EBA, EPA celebrate jointly 6th NNP Day

EPA: - Workers of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority (EBA) and The Ethiopian Press Agency (EPA) celebrated here on Hidar 27/2004 E.C Ethiopian nations, nationalities and peoples (NNP) Day with various programmes.
In an event organized at the head quarter of EPA for 6th time under ‘’ our constitution for our diversity, unity and renaissance’’ Sebesebe Kebede, EPA general Manager out lined the achievements that made the celebration unique.
The initiatives taken by Ethiopian nations, nationalities and peoples to build the renaissance dam, to implement the GTP, according to he has given it color and flavor.

Staffs of the two organizations need to implement unwaveringly the rights enshrined in the constitution particularly those in article 29 as they directly relate to their day to day activities, he said.
Papers on the basic principles of the constitution and the unique features of the federal system, role of civil service institutions and benefits of citizens were respectively presented by EBA staffs , Gizaw Tesfaye, Shiferaw Solomon and Mulugeta Sisay , followed by question - answer sessions.
Paneling the event, Leuel Geberu, EBA Deputy General Director noted that staffs of the two government organizations need not only respect and make respected the constitution but also be in the forefront of the country’s struggle to come out of the quagmire of poverty.
Finally, awards were given to the winners of the Question- answer competitions held between the two organizations.

WAD colorfully celebrated

EBA: staff of the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority (EBA) celebrated here on Hidar / November 22/2004 the World AIDS Day (WAD).
WAD was celebrated, on the eve of the 16th ICASA 20011 Conference, for 30th time world wide and 23rd nation wide under the theme-‘’getting to zero: zero New HIV Infections, Zero discrimination and Zero AIDS Related Deaths.
Organized by the authority HIV/AIDs task force, the day was attended by directors and team leaders.
Opening the day, EBA Director General, Desta Tesfaw thanking those staff members who took the initiative of Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) said that others need to emulate from their exemplary deeds.
Mrs. Aberehet Berehae, nurse counselor at Zewedutu Hospital, educated the staff on counseling, VCT, and ethical standards as well as challenges and opportunities. She also briefed them on models and types of VCT.

Poems, features, and papers were part and parcel of the celebration on her part noted that her unit will continue owing, sustaining and scaling up its efforts geared towards preventing HIV/AIDS.
Some 30 years have now been counted since the first case of HIV/AIDs patient was hospitalized.

Broadcasters association established

Addis Ababa: Ethiopian Broadcasters Association is established here at Ras Hotel on Hidar/ November 20 /2004 E.C.
In a two day consultative meeting held in the presence of broadcasters and stakeholders , EBA came to existence in an effort to share experiences , solve challenges, utilize opportunities and strengthen relations between and among themselves .
After the facilitating committee report was heard and deliberations were made on the draft bylaw , the association eventually was established with full consensus from all stakeholders.
A seven member executive committee composed of public, commercial community broadcasters i.e Ethiopian Televsion , Addis Ababa Mass media organization ,Oromiya Radio and ,Fana Broadcasting Corporate , Sheger Fm, and Wagemera and Kembata community radios was elected in that order to the run day to day activities of the association for the coming three years term.
Meanwhile presentations were made monitoring and inspection findings concerning on public complaints and suggestions by the Ethiopian Broadcasting Authority. More over , papers on the role of the stakeholders and the authority on the Government Growth and Transformation Plan as well as clarification on the digital migration were tabled for debate and discussion .
Responding to the questions and concerns raised by stakeholders, Desta Tesfaw and Shiferaw Solomon and Bedelu W/Mariam on behalf of EBA said that the role of the stake holders in enhancing and speeding up the GTP is immense. The stakeholders on their part reiterated that they would contribute their share towards the efforts of the governments as well as the authority .
Fana Broadcasting Corporate has reportedly sponsored the establishment .

EBA participates on digital migration workshop

Uganda: - Ethiopia, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zimbabwe presented their experiences and achievements on policy, regulatory and operational issues with respect to the digital migration implementation process set by ITU.
This was disclosed at a work shop conducted from the 23rd to 25th November, 2001 at the imperial Royal Hotel, Kampala, Uganda.
Included in the presentations, among, others were set top box standards, affordability and availability. This is not to mention the DVB-T/T2 and DTMB tests that some of them have recently conducted.
Bedelu Wolde Mariam team Leader with the Ethiopian Broad casting Authority Mass Media Registration and licensing Directorate, has attended the three day workshop.
According to him, the work shop that focused on the migration process in line with the union’s dead line of 2015, has called countries to set clear policy frameworks to synchronize the process with adopted standards, economic implications, and illumination.
Set top box should have tax waiver or subsidy to make it more affordable, member states suggested and theoretical and practical tests need to be conducted where possible for any standard consideration before a final decision is taken.

A review of the digital transition progress showed that Ethiopia is among the seven COMESA countries piloting the migration , while Mauritius is said to be the most advanced country in embracing it.
earlier welcoming the delegates, Ugandan state minister of ICT , Mr. Thembo urged participants to share experiences and chart the way forward to leverage growth and development .members need to continue to work together and strengthen their collaboration under COMESA, he underlined.
The transition to digital broadcasting is a global phenomenon via the Geneva Agreement (GE-06) to which COMESA member states are signatories.
Speaking on behalf of the secretary general of COMESA, Dr.Abu Sufian Dafalla noted that digital migration is switching from inefficient analogue signals to more efficient digital ones and touches a number of political, economic, operational and social issues.
Closing the work shop ,Ms.Rose Namayanja, minister of state for luweero commending UCC and COMESA for co-hosting said most television sets in Africa don’t have digital tuner built in and TV viewers would have to either to acquire integrated digital(IDTV) sets or convert their existing analogue TV sets using set-top boxes(STB’s) called popularly decoders. According to her the new dawn of broadcasting technology must be accompanied by a responsible code of conduct for all players.
Having discussed the way forward, the workshop decided that tripartite level discussions are intiated between SADAC, EAC and COMESA at both technical and policy levels to harmonize the migration process. The set dead lines are tight to fast track in the region as some countries are at the initial stage of the process.
When Uganda and Mauritius were elected chair, and vice chair persons respectively, Malawi became a rapporteur.
The meeting was attended by 15 African countries and AUC, EAC and SADC and the African Union Commission. |
