Mesekele square: -The Ethiopian Broadcasting authority (EBA) in collaboration with Kirkos Sub City administration transplanted on Thursday, July 28, 2011 various seedlings in connection with the rainy season.
Authority staff, families of the artist, members of the Ethiopian musicians association , and pedestrians have participated in the program that stretched along the routes and pavements leading to saris beginning from the Mesekele Square through the legendary artist Dr. Tilahun Gesese square up to richae area .
Launching the program officially, Leul Geberu, Deputy General Manager of the Authority said for erosion not only causes damage to soil fertility but also affects irrigation and HEP, it is timely and necessary to transplant seedlings. And as such the mass media in Ethiopia need to take the initiative in mobilizing the public for same purpose. In this regard what EBA staff has done is an exemplary activity, he remarked.
EBA, according to him, apart from expanding the mass media throughout the country, will participate as much as possible in environmental conservation and afforestation endeavors.
Wife of the late legendary artist Dr. Tilahun Geseses, Roman Bezu on her behalf reiterated that EBA deserves thanks and appreciation for taking the initiative to plant seedlings in the routes to the artist’s square and beautify the area. I think such noble mission need to continue in an organized fashion in the future as well, she stated. Dawit Yefru , Ethiopian Musicians Association chairman who was cheerful for attending the event said that planting seedlings especially along the artist’s square is not only historical but also cultural .Thanking once again the authority for transplanting seedlings his office has raised, sub city park and recreation office representative , Meseganaw Abichae said utmost care and caution must be taken in handling and putting them into the soil.
Earlier staff carried placards and chanted slogan relating to conservation and afforestation.
Among others, familes of the artist, Music composer Teddy Mac, Ethiopian Idol Show editor in chief, and other invited guests were also in attendant of the program.
Some 250 local seedlings were believed to be planted in the half day program.
Ethiopia losses every year some 1 billion tones of soil by erosion, it was learnt. |
